Internal Medicine Overview

  • Overview

Internal Medicine Internal medicine is the primary care specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. The internists at University Health can treat common illnesses such as viruses, infections, depression and anxiety, or the aches and pains that you can’t figure out. Internists also treat chronic illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, and high cholesterol. If and when your internist refers you to a specialist such as a cardiologist or surgeon, he or she will oversee and coordinate your care — all with your well-being in mind.

Patient education plays an important role. Your internist will give you information and guidance on how to stay healthy or manage chronic conditions. In addition, internists can help explain any new diagnosis or treatment. Their patient centered medical home team will help coordinate and manage your needs within the complex health care system.

When you have a medical concern, your internist should be your first call. Even if you think you might need to see a specialist, let your internist see you first. He or she may be able to manage your concern to save you the out-of-pocket costs of seeing a specialist.
